A late-night garage fire in the town of Milan prompted a large multi-agency response on Wednesday, April 15, with about 60 firefighters from eight departments called in to battle the blaze, according to a release from Jeffrey Galm, public information officer and an assistant fire chief for the Milan Volunteer Fire Department.
Milan and Pine Plains fire departments were dispatched at 11:45 p.m. to 94 Mountain Road while some firefighters were already responding to storm-related calls from severe weather that had moved through the area, Galm said.
When crews arrived, they found a 1 1/2-story garage fully engulfed in flames. Several vehicles and pieces of excavating equipment outside the garage were also burning, and the fire was threatening a nearby residence.
A second alarm was requested soon after the initial response, bringing in additional manpower and apparatus. Firefighters shuttled water from about four miles away as crews from Milan, Pine Plains, Stanford, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Tivoli, Stanford, and Livingston worked to contain the fire.
The blaze was brought under control in just under two hours and fully extinguished about five hours after the initial dispatch, Galm said. The cause remains under investigation, though fire officials said it is not considered suspicious.
No injuries were reported.
West Clinton and Livingston fire departments stood by at two Milan stations during the incident. Also assisting at the scene were New York State Police, the Pine Plains Fire Department ambulance, Dutchess County EMS, Dutchess County Emergency Response, the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division, and the Milan Highway Department.
