The new adult swimming access point at Stissing Lake — work on which began last summer — is set to open on Saturday, July 4, according to Lauren Kaplan, chair of the Pine Plains Conservation Advisory Council.

The access point will allow swimmers to enter the lake a few feet from the town beach area — which opened June 11 — even when its lifeguards are off duty.

“The CAC is excited for the adult swim lane to connect our community’s love for the lake and its recreational value with an increased awareness about the fragile ecosystems there and how we can responsibly steward this special natural resource,” Kaplan said.

In May, the town commissioned the cleaning of a benthic barrier that was installed on the lake bed last summer — a polymer mat that prevents unwanted plant growth and creates a clear path in the water. The town plans to remove additional fencing, according to Kaplan, and install a “swim at your own risk” sign by July 4.

Next steps for the project include placing wooden planks near the water’s edge, said Kaplan, and if feasible, moving the buttonbush — a native plant good for pollinators — that is currently right in the middle of the entryway, to the side.

Kaplan described the July 4 opening as a “soft launch,” to be followed by the next phase — installing a walkway and native plants at the shoreline. It will also include hanging up educational signage explaining the lake ecosystem and habitat for visitors, and how residents can help protect it, Kaplan said.

The CAC hopes to plant the native vegetation by fall, but it could be delayed to spring of 2027, said Kaplan, depending on what it determines to be the best season for the plants. Kaplan said the group plans to organize a native planting day to educate residents about the flora and fauna of the lake and the role of native plants in sustaining the environment, while inviting volunteers to help with the planting.

Members are researching potential grants to cover the cost of the plants, as well as sources of funding and content for the educational signage, she said.

Kim Denardis, who is also a member of the CAC, has been involved with the planning since last year and said she is excited for the opening. Prior to the official entryway, people entered the water through unofficial spots around the water, without proper access to parking. They can now use the recreation center lot.

“I live directly across the lake and am fortunate to be able to swim right from our deck,” said Denardis. “Many adult swimmers regularly enjoy the lake and this will give them a place to park with a designated spot to access the water.”
