Seventy five “refugees” were registered in the Pine Plains area from 5 to 7 pm in the county wide evacuation drill under the direction of the Red Cross chapter’s committee. These maneuvers were the first of this type to be held in the U.S. Two thousand persons participated through the nine emergency stations which were located convenient to the routes which New Yorkers would be likely to use in fleeing a bombed city. “Refugees” arriving in Pine Plains were registered at the firehouse and served a supper of beans, two slices of unbuttered bread and apples at the Grange hall. Those designated as needing shelter were directed to the Pine Plains Central school.
