The Pine Plains Free Library is one of 14 recipients of Dutchess County’s new Youth Opportunity Union (YOU) Drop-In Center grants, which awarded $250,000 to libraries and youth-serving organizations across the county. The library will receive $15,000 to install new chairs, shelving, and other furniture in its Teen Section and Children’s Room — part of a broader initiative to create safe, welcoming spaces for young people.

We are very excited and grateful to receive this YOU Drop-In Grant. Our youth library visits and program attendance have steadily increased and this money will be used to purchase more seating and shelving to meet demand. We hope to have some installed by the time our Summer Reading program starts in July,” said the library’s director, Dee Ann Cambell.

A lot of young people need a safe, friendly place to go after school — somewhere they feel supported, can make friends and get help when they need it,” Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said in a statement. “These grants will build and improve spaces where kids can try new things, learn skills and connect with caring adults and peer groups. By supporting these efforts, Dutchess County is creating opportunities for every child to grow and succeed.”

In total, Pine Plains Free Library’s enhancements will support access for an estimated 200 children and teens who use the youth areas regularly.

According to the county, the 2025 budget includes more than $700,000 in youth services funding for a reimagined Youth Opportunity Union (YOU) initiative, including drop-in center grants, mini grants, summer camp scholarships, and an expansion of the Youth Police Initiative.
