Pine Plains varsity field hockey cruised to an 8-0 victory over Pine Bush at home Monday, Sept. 29, improving to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Sophomore Aerianna Sommerville opened the scoring less than four minutes into the first quarter, converting a pass from senior Faith Foglia. Four minutes later, the pair reversed roles, with Foglia scoring her first goal of the season off an assist from Sommerville.
Senior Nala Soria then took over offensively. She scored off a feed from junior Grace Wolfmann following a penalty corner and added another goal just over a minute later, giving Pine Plains a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
Soria scored twice more in the second quarter to finish with four goals on the day.
Freshman Amelia Anderson added Pine Plains’ seventh goal late in the first half after junior Madison Williams created a breakaway and sent the ball into the circle.
Wolfmann closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter, carrying the ball downfield, getting around the Pine Bush goalkeeper and finishing at the opposite post.
Pine Plains controlled possession throughout the game, recording 49 shots on goal and nine penalty corners while holding Pine Bush without a shot or corner.
Senior Ella Fitzpatrick made her first career start in goal for the Bombers and earned the win. Sophomore Lauren Kenny finished the game in goal as the two combined for the shutout.
Pine Bush goalkeepers Gwendalinn Lyons and Sophia Weber faced heavy pressure throughout the game. Lyons recorded 14 saves in the first half, while Weber made 26 saves in the second. Olivia Graziano also recorded a defensive save.
Pine Bush fell to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Pine Plains returns to action Thursday, Oct. 1, with an away game against Red Hook.
