The Milan Town Board passed Local Law No. 4 at its Oct. 21 meeting, amending the town’s zoning code to establish specific regulations for firehouses and fire stations.
This zoning change was prompted by the Milan Volunteer Fire Department’s recent purchase of additional property, which required updated regulations to allow the department to expand operations. The new law ensures compliance with current land-use regulations that did not exist when the original firehouse was built. The board, in a unanimous 4-0 vote, adopted the law, with the town supervisor absent.
During the meeting, the board voted to waive the reading of Local Law No. 4. However, when the Herald inquired about the law’s specifics during the public comment period, the board explained the necessity of the amendment to accommodate the fire department’s expansion. No further public comments were made regarding the zoning change.
The board also voted unanimously to adopt the 2025 tentative budget as the preliminary budget, following a special meeting on Oct. 4.
In addition to these approvals, the board made several key appointments. Kathryn Osbourne was appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a term ending on Dec. 31, 2026, and William Gallagher was reappointed to the Board of Assessment Review for a five-year term ending Dec. 31, 2029. Jake Sortini resigned from the Milan ZBA, effective immediately.
Looking ahead, the board scheduled two public hearings for Nov. 7 at Milan Town Hall: one at 6:50 p.m. on the 2025 Preliminary Budget and another at 6:55 p.m. to discuss the contract between the town and the Milan Volunteer Fire Company. The Herald will provide a detailed breakdown of Milan’s 2025 preliminary budget in the next edition.
