Pine Plains residents who have been using the Milan Transfer Station to dispose of trash and recyclables will not be able to use that facility beginning this weekend. Non-Milan residents will no longer be able to use the facility.

In December, a letter from the Town of Milan to its residents explained the need for the change of policy. Royal Carting, Inc., which had operated the transfer station, informed Milan in September that it would end its tenure on January 1, 2023. Milan put the management of its transfer station out to bid and only two bids were received. The low bid was from the very same Royal Carting, Inc. but the cost was significantly higher than under the previous arrangement.

To use the Transfer Station, Milan residents must purchase a vehicle sticker from the town clerk at a cost of $20.00 (65 and older – $15.00). In addition, a list of accepted  items and a fee schedule has been published and can be found at this link.  The Milan Transfer Station is open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. unless a holiday occurs on that Saturday.

Pine Plains residents can dispose of some items at a site in Pine Plains adjacent to the Highway Department off West Church Street. The items accepted are metal, cardboard, paper and brush (small branches and leaves). This is a free service provided by the town.  The site is accessible when the gate is open and corresponds to Highway Department hours (Monday thru Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) and Saturdays 8:00 am to 1:00 p.m.
