A heavy rain hit the area. The Roeliff Jansen Kill had the ice broken and piled in stacks 15 ft. high near Charles Stickles’ meadow. Ex-Pine Plains Supervisor Jacob S. Hinsdale lost a team of valuable horses. They were standing on ground that had been undermined by the torrents. The ground gave way, the horses sank into the creek and were instantly drowned. The wagon pole broke and the animals were washed downstream into Mt. Ross Creek, over the dam at Van Tassel’s mill to Robert Gray’s farm about halfway between Jackson Corners and Elizaville, where they were caught and held up by a clump of trees. the neck yoke and whiffletrees kept them together all this distance.
