Joan Wyant, a longtime Milan resident, died on March 28 at Northern Dutchess Hospital. She was 81.

Wyant was born on Dec. 14, 1943, in Rhinebeck to Clarence and Marie (Craft) Wood.

She graduated from Staatsburg School and married Harry Wyant on Jan. 26, 2963, in Clinton Corners. He died last year.

Wyant was the owner of Joni’s Grocery in Milan from the early 1970’s to the mid 1980’s. She then went to work as a housekeeper at Bard College, where she worked for more than 25 years.

Wyant was active in town politics in Milan and served on the town board. 

Wyant is survived by her son, Robert J. (Lisa) Wyant; her daughter, Angela (Tony) Cartagena; four grandchildren: Austin Cartagena and Joshua, Morgan, Jordan Wyant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration will take place on April 13 at the Milan Town Hall from noon to 4 p.m. Graveside services will be held privately at the Milan Union Cemetery at a future date.

The family asked that donations in Wyant’s memory may be made to the SPCA of Dutchess County, 636 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, N.Y. 12538.
