James J. Cody died at his home in Rhinebeck on March 29. He was 90.

Born in Yonkers on June 8, 1933, he was the son of John J. and Alice (Duffy) Cody.

After graduating high school, Cody served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. After his military service, he studied the construction trade, eventually starting Cody Construction in LaGrange, N.Y.

Cody and his wife, Joan, moved from Yonkers with their three children in 1969 to LaGrange. After retiring, they moved to Hawaii for several years before returning to New York.

Cody was an avid swimmer, kayaker and writer who was a member of a writers group in Pine Plains.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Sharon Cody, Brian Cody, and Sheila Cody; and four grandchildren Elena, Zachariah, Grace, and James Jr.

Visitation will be at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck, on April 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. Military honors and a time of sharing will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The family requested that donations in Cody’s honor be made to Doctors Without Borders.
