Herbert (Herbie) Medfield Dam of Pine Plains died on Dec. 1 after a long illness. He was 81.

Dam was born on May 24, 1943, in Sharon, Conn., to Herbert and Alice Dam. Dam grew up in Pine Plains, and remained there until his death.

Dam was a Navy veteran, and later worked as a mechanic and auto body repair person.

Dam is survived his children, Edward (Hannah Steiner) Daley, Denise (Charles) Seviour, Dolores (Wayne Humes) Daley, Sean (Beatris) Daley and Siobhan (Thomas) Cook; his stepchildren, Tina Conn, Robert Conn, Mike Conn, Amanda Montemorra and Tabitha Montemorra; his grandchildren, including Cherelle Daley, Steven Daley, Ashley Meara, Rebecca Kelly, Cameron Seviour, Amanda Humes, Paul Daley, Anna Daley, Rebekah Daley, Caelan Cook, Teagan Cook, Heather Matta, James Matta, Joshua Matta and Annette Matta; a great-granddaughter, Zahyanna Thomas; and his cousins, Kathy Dam and David Dam.

His wife, Cynthia Dam, died in 2019.

Services with military honors will be held in the springtime at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery at a date and time to be announced.
