Long-time Pine Plains resident and teacher Elizabeth L. Chestney died on Dec. 1, 2022. She was 84.
Ms. Chestney was born in the Bronx and grew up in Craryville, where she graduated from Roeliff Jansen High School. She graduated from Plattsburgh State Teachers College in 1959 and returned to the area to teach for many years in the Pine Plains school system at Seymour Smith and Cold Spring elementary schools, and remained active with the Pine Plains retired teachers’ association after her retirement.
She was a member of the Pine Plains United Methodist Church, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid seamstress, and belonged to several embroidering and quilting groups while pursuing her love of sewing.
While in college, she met Gerald W. Chestney and they were married right after her graduation. Mr. Chestney, the long-time director of Peck & Peck Funeral Home, died in 2016. She is survived by their daughter, Cathy Fitzpatrick, of Pine Plains; their son, Christopher Chestney, of Rhinebeck; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her brother, Henry Frueh.
A funeral was scheduled for Dec. 6, at Peck & Peck Funeral Home at 7749 Main St., Pine Plains, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains.
