A Letter from the Editor
Dear Readers,
As we bid farewell to 2024, I’ve been reflecting on the stories we’ve shared here at the New Pine Plains Herald — the stories that informed us, pushed us to ask harder questions and connected us.
This has been a year of growth and progress for the Herald, and none of it would have been possible without your support. Your curiosity and trust fuel the work we do, and I’m proud to highlight some of the stories that our team brought to you this year.
This year we:
- Investigated the ongoing EMS crisis in our rural communities with an in-depth, two-part series.
- Reported on the Durst Organization’s listing of nearly 2,000 acres in Pine Plains and Milan, uncovering the history behind the property.
- Highlighted the impact of U.S, Postal Service staffing shortages on customers across our service area.
- Chronicled the devastating Kemmerer Farm fire in Stanfordville and the community’s extraordinary efforts to help rebuild.
- Provided comprehensive Election 2024 coverage, from local to federal races, tailored to our community’s needs.
- Exposed how Dutchess County missed a critical opportunity to address the housing crisis with ADUs.
- Delivered consistent, reliable coverage of Town, Zoning and Planning Board meetings across Pine Plains, Ancram, Gallatin, Milan and Stanford.
- Delivered in-depth profiles of local business owners, pastors, artists, non-profit leaders and farmers.
Every piece of reporting stems from a single belief: that local journalism is vital to the health of a community. But as we know, good journalism doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It requires resources, time and a steadfast commitment to the truth.
As we close the year, we’re asking for your help to secure the Herald’s future. Our year-end fundraising campaign aims to raise $50,000, ensuring that we can continue our work in 2025. Every dollar helps us dig deeper and tell more of the stories that matter most to you.
If you believe in the importance of independent local journalism, we hope you’ll consider making a contribution today.
On behalf of our entire team, thank you — for your readership, your trust and your belief in the power of local news. Here’s to another year of journalism that brings us closer to the heart of what matters. Together, we can make 2025 our best year yet.
With gratitude,
Patrick Grego
