December 28, 1891

At about half past six in the evening, Mrs. Smith, who lives in the west part of Hatmaker’s house at the north end of Pine St., was reading in her room on the second floor when she smelled smoke, which was discovered coming through the floor. Going downstairs she found the room below filled with flames and though an immediate alarm was given the flames had already progressed so far and were making such rapid headway that it was impossible to save anything belonging to her. The other part of the house was occupied by Mrs. Nevill, but she lost very little as there was time to remove her furniture and household effects. Of course nothing could be done to check the conflagration, and the structure burned to the ground. Perhaps residents will think about getting a water worker in our town.
