The New York Association of Towns (NYAOT) has named Stanford a Gold Town of Excellence, its highest distinction for local government performance.
The award, announced in late November, places Stanford in the inaugural class of municipalities recognized for achievements in areas including economic development, sustainability, community engagement, quality of life, governance, and workforce development.
In its announcement, NYAOT said it was “especially impressed with the town’s commitment to community engagement and transparency – these are examples of what truly makes a town a fantastic place to live and work.”
Stanford’s application, submitted by Stanford Town Clerk Ritamary Bell, highlighted initiatives that broaden civic participation and strengthen planning, including a new Natural Resource Inventory to guide land-use decisions, expanded composting programs, and ongoing recreation investments such as the multiyear replacement of the SPARC Park playground. The town has also added community events, including an annual Pride celebration, and created volunteer committees focused on climate resilience and historic preservation.
Founded in 1933, the New York Association of Towns represents more than 97% of the state’s 933 towns. The organization advocates for municipal home rule, provides training and legal resources to local officials, and supports municipal planning across the state. Its Towns of Excellence program recognizes municipalities that “go above and beyond” in delivering effective and transparent government.
As a Gold award recipient, Stanford will receive a reserved table at NYAOT’s awards luncheon, inclusion in the statewide press announcement, a Town Hall decal and placement in promotional materials during the annual meeting. Additional recognition includes a place in the “Hall of Excellence.”
NYAOT’s annual conference is scheduled for early next year in Albany.
