In the belly of the basement of the Pine Plains Free Library and Community Center, the mats of the Pine Plains Wrestling team are waiting patiently to be utilized by its newest team.

When the program began roughly six years ago, it had a hard time finding a home that could store the heavy mats and equipment needed to make the program possible. With the help of then Town Supervisor Brian Coons and the Pine Plains Recreation Department, the idea to host the program in the mostly empty basement of the Pine Plains Free Library and Community Center became reality and has been the home to the program since.

Now, the program is back for another year and under new management. Coaches Andy Anderson and Mike Cooper are working together to get the program up and running for an amazing new season with new mats, new gear, and new perspectives.

Local Ted Howley has also been helping to get the program on its feet this year. He’s been a part of the Pine Plains Wrestling Team since his son got involved in the program roughly three years ago.

“Wrestling instills discipline, confidence, and strength within children,” he stated. “It is such a positive outlet for them.”

Research has shown that recreational activities are beneficial to children in many ways. Sports teach children leadership and social skills, as well as improve mental health for adolescents across all age groups. In addition to the physical benefits from overall physical activity, well-lead recreational programs can help children master many life skills that help them find success later in life and in their careers, regardless of the fields they go into. “We would love your children to become a part of our team,” Howley emphasized.
