Martha A. Imperato, a longtime Pine Plains school nurse and community figure, died on Feb. 5, 2023. She was 93.

She was born Martha McCauley in 1929 in Red Hook, N.Y., and attended the Seymour Smith Academy in Pine Plains. She later attended nursing school in New York City and worked in several hospitals there. She met her husband, Louis Imperato, while she was an emergency room head nurse.

She returned to Pine Plains with her husband, where she worked for many years in the Pine Plains Central School District as a nurse, and where she and her husband raised their five children.

During that time, Martha Imperato was involved in many community matters, volunteering with the local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, helping to found the Bomber Boosters organization to support local school sports teams and also helping to found the ladies auxiliary of the Pine Plains Hose Company, which supported the work of the fire department.

Her husband was town justice for 19 years prior to his death in 2016.

She is survived by her children, Joseph, Helen, Rosemary, John and Martha Ann, her brothers Harris McCauley and Earl McCauley, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Feb. 9 at Peck and Peck Funeral Home, Pine Plains. The Pine Plains Hose Company also conducted a memorial service the same day. A brief service was held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 10 at Peck and Peck Funeral Home, followed by interment at Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains and a reception at the Pine Plains firehouse.

The family requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Pine Plains Hose Company in Imperato’s memory.
