Carl P. Sardaro Sr., died peacefully on Nov. 25. He was 92. 

He was born in 1931 to Xavier and Katherine (Bischoff) Sardaro in Brooklyn. He was a 1949 graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory High School and attended St. Peter’s College in New Jersey, where he played lacrosse as a goalie until he was drafted in 1952. He served in the 501st Infantry Division in Korea and was discharged in 1954. 

A devout Catholic, he served as a lector at St. Anthony’s Church in Pine Plains. He also had a passion for model railroading and public service. He was a member of the Kingston Model Railroad Club and was also scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 51. He was in the Fantastic Fox Patrol in Woodbridge, and was also a member of the Boys Scouts’ Order of the Arrow. He was a 60-year member of the Milan Volunteer Fire Department, where he served in many roles, most notably as a member of the board of directors from 1977 to 2023. 

He married Eileen Blackburn in 1961. She died in 2000. He is survived by four children, Carl Sardaro Jr., Catherine Sardaro-Gomm, Alfred Sardaro and Mark Sardaro; six grandchildren, Thomas Gomm, Philipp Gomm, Rebecca Sardaro-Crawford, Catherine A. Gomm, and Angela and Phillipp Sardaro; his brother, John Sardaro; and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. His sister, Joan Dilgen, and nieces Nicole and Kendra Sardaro and nephews Edward and Zane Sardaro also died before him. 

Burial will take place at a future date in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains. 

The family requested that donations in Sardaro’s memory be made to the Milan Volunteer Fire Department or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
