The Columbia County Public Works Committee met Wednesday, March 18, and recommended extending the temporary closure of the Gallatin Convenience Station through June 1, 2026, according to county officials.

The station, located at 2180 Route 82, has been closed since Dec. 1 due to staffing shortages that county officials previously described as unsafe and unsustainable. The closure had originally been scheduled to reopen in April.

In November, Wendy S. Madsen, director of the Columbia County Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division, said the station had been operating with only one attendant for several months and that it had become increasingly difficult to hire qualified staff available to work Saturdays.

During the closure, residents are encouraged to use nearby convenience stations, including the Livingston Station at 366 County Route 19 and the Copake Station at 768 County Route 7A (Center Hill Road).

County officials said signage at the Gallatin station has been updated to reflect the extended closure, and an updated recycling center flyer has also been distributed.

Residents with questions or concerns regarding the station closure should contact the Columbia County Solid Waste Department at 518-828-2737.
