Herman A. Haire Jr. died on Jan. 2. He was 79.

Haire was born on Jan. 11, 1946, in Poughkeepsie, the son of Herman and Marjorie (Lown) Haire Sr. He graduated from Pine Plains High School and then served three years in the U.S. Army. On Oct. 5, 1969, he married Isabel “Tuddie” Horton, who survives him.

Haire was at various times chief of the Pine Plains Police Department, chief of the Pine Plains Hose Co., and a Pine Plains fire commissioner. He also worked for the New York State Police.

Besides his wife, Haire is survived by a daughter, Melissa (Eddie) Weingaertner; a son, Damon (Amy) Haire; six grandchildren: Morgan Fitzpatrick, Keri Conley, Jaden Weingaertner, Travis Hengen, Faith Haire and Austin Haire; four great grandchildren: Easton Fitzpatrick, Hunter Fitzpatrick, Jayce Conley, and Miley Hengen. He is also survived by a brother, James (Jane) Haire, and three sisters, JoAnn (Bobby) Lamont, Dorothy Simmons and Sue Ellen (Dave) Doherty, as well as by many nieces and nephews. A son, Alfred Charles Haire; a brother, Harold Haire; and a sister, Linda Churton, all died before him.

Visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 11 at Peck & Peck Funeral Homes, 7749 South Main St., Pine Plains, followed by a ceremony conducted by the Pine Plains Hose Co.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that contributions be made to Pine Plains Hose Company, 7 Lake Road, Pine Plains, New York 12567.
