As the NY&M [New York and Massachusetts] train was leaving the station, James Welch was instantly killed. He attempted to board the train after it was under pretty good headway and got on the step at the forward end of the baggage car when he lost his hold and fell back directly under the wheels. Both trucks of the baggage car and one wheel of the coach passed over his breast and arms cutting off the latter and nearly cutting his body in two.
